Prof Victoria Collis Buthelezi | RGC Director

Victoria is Director of the Centre for the Study of Race, Gender & Class and an Associate Professor in English at the University of Johannesburg. Her research interests include histories of 20th century Black globalism, as well as Caribbean, African, and African American literatures and print cultures. Full bio

James Macdonald | RGC Research Coordinator

James is a scholar and arts organiser committed to projects of imagination and repair. James works as the Research Coordinator of the Centre for the Study of Race, Gender & Class (RGC) at the University of Johannesburg, and is a PhD candidate at Vrije University, Amsterdam.

Dani Bowler | RGC Curator

Danielle Bowler is a curator, writer, editor and musician based in Johannesburg. With bylines in multiple publications including Dazed, Wanted Magazine, Imbiza Journal of African Writing, New Frame, Africa is a Country, and Moya, her work focuses on reading, understanding and theorising art and culture through a Black feminist lens.

Nombuso Mathibela | RGC Archivist

Nombuso Mathibela is a Johannesburg-based cultural worker, educator, writer, researcher, vinyl collector and selector. Her sonic research interest spans ecology, folk, anti-colonialism, nationalism, animism and anti-genre music and literary histories. She uses sound as a text and method to learn, think and play with the people who make up what we have come to understand as the Black radical tradition, across time, borders and seas. 

Thandiwe Ntshinga | RGC Researcher

Thandiwe Ntshinga is a researcher, writer and poultry farmer, living in rural Pretoria. Incorporating radical Black feminist thought to the analysis of whiteness, Thandiwe writes on whiteness and its intersectionality as it relates to social issues, nationally and internationally. A semi-retired activist, Thandiwe has been involved in activist activities around gender-based violence, racism, homelessness, HIV, sexual health and reproductive rights as well as queer issues.

Kutlwano Mokwena | RGC Administrator

Kutlwano Mokwena has a Diploma in Public Relations and Communications, an Advanced Diploma in Operations Management, and is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Operations Management. She loves fashion, art, popular culture, books and anything that challenges her creativity.

Zoe Neocosmos | RGC Researcher

Zoe is a scholar and an enthusiast of African fictional narratives. With a commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices, Zoe has collaborated with organisations in gender-based violence, LGBTQIA+ rights, and technology in Africa. Zoe previously served as a postgraduate research fellow at The Wits Institute of Social and Economic Research (Wiser). Her research focuses on the complexities of South African slave narratives through the lens of oceanic studies and black queer feminist theory.
